The first PASCL conference was held in conjunction with the 28th European Students’ Convention, which gathered members of students’ unions and stakeholders from throughout Europe in Florence, Italy from 28th to 30th September 2014.
One of the main objectives of the PASCL project is undertaking intensive research on SCL policy and practice in European Higher Education Area, on both university and national level with integrated students’ perspective, which will then result in critical analysis of the state of implementation of SCL since the Leuven Communiqué, when SCL concept was introduced. The first results of the research conducted by this project cover institutional implementation of SCL, targeting European Universities, giving their self-reflection on implementation of the concept and its further development.
We have shared the findings of the research with the ESU Board and promoted further discussion in order to receive much needed input from the National Unions of Students (NUS). Consultation with the Board was necessary in order to raise awareness about the paradigm shift, and ensure transfer of understanding for the concept to the everyday student. Therefore the aim of this convention was to provide our member NUSes with substantial knowledge of the concept and advocacy guidelines for its promotion. Special attention was given to topics such as student-centred learning as part of e-learning processes, inclusive pedagogy of student-centred learning, correlation of student-centred learning with both quality assurance and commodification, and different definitions applying to student-centred learning and its relevance to the curriculum, assessment and learning outcomes. We hope that points raised will promote discussion and result in better understanding of SCL concept and its value to different stakeholders Further stages of research call for more active student involvement in evaluating the process of implementation of SCL on institutional level, but also commenting efforts on national level when creation policy on SCL. This is where our members have played a key role in providing input and creating a platform for sharing best practices.
The event was also used to draw attention to the adopted definition of SCL by ESU, and the one used in the project:
Student Centered Learning represents both a mindset and a culture within a given higher education institution and is a learning approach which is broadly related to, and supported by, constructivist theories of learning. It is characterized by innovative methods of teaching which aim to promote learning in communication with teachers and other learners and which take students seriously as active participants in their own learning , fostering transferable skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking and reflective thinking.
